The first entry I ever published in this blog was about Cory Kennedy. I explained very lightly who she was, and why she was famous. At that time, at the beginning of 2007, the Cory Kennedy phenomenon was at its top: she appeared at thousands of posts about personal style, whilst many people wondered where she was from and why everybody was talking about her. I found her fascinating (well, not Cory herself, the Cory phenomenon), and I quite liked her style. I wouldn’t dress like her, but I think that she created a totally new trend with her messy hair and the combination of Chanel and WalMart. I think she was the first internet celebrity.
Let’s remember: five years ago, in 2005, Cory Kennedy met Mark Hunter The Cobrasnake at a Blood Brothers concert. Cory was 15 years old, and Mark was 20. They became friends, and Cory began working as an intern two days a week at his office during summer that year, as part of a program held by her high school. The Cobrasnake had thousands of avid followers from all over the world that visited his site in search of photos from the craziest parties. Cory would say "He [Mark] makes it look like the best party in the whole wide world when it could be the worst one". They had a sentimental relationship.
Cory began accompanying Mark to the party scene of Santa Mónica, Los Ángeles. Celebrities like Adam Brody (The O.C), the band Kings of Leon, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Vincent Gallo, Sean Lennon, etc, were the usual party-goers that came across Cory. Everytime The Cobrasnake published a new photo of Cory, the hits would multiply, as every fashion forum and blog analyzed the style of the fifteen years old girl. Mark saw how there was a big opportunity for Cory and decided to make the most of it. She was named (unofficially) the face of The Cobrasnake philosophy, and soon she began being featured at fashion magazines. Mark introduced Cory to Marvin Scott Jarrett, Nylon’s editor, and she was photographed for an editorial. Some months later, she graced the cover of the magazine. She was a myspace celebrity already.
She was mentioned in The New York Times, and L.A clubs paid her 100$ a day for attending their parties. Cory had drop out of high school and studied at home. Her parents realized the situation was out of control and sent her to a sort of boarding school with her twin sister. Emotional disorders, depression… Nevertheless, Cory didn’t waste any opportunity and would party when she was allowed and go to photoshoots (with parental supervision), even though the phone use was restricted. She appeared in the cover of Woman’s Wear Daily, she had her own wikipedia page (though it was deleted, as they said she was not famous or important enough, and then put online months later), she got the Urban Decay campaign, the Sebastian ads, the Jalouse cover (photographed by Terry Richardson), she signed with the model agency One Model (that represents models like Devon Aoki) and she wrote a column in Nylon every month.
Her 15 minutes of fame lasted a couple of years (2005 and 2006), she kept getting press during 2007, and things calmed down in 2008-2009. The girl that starred in the Good Charlotte’s video “Keep your hands off my girl” (in which she simply ate something in front of the camera), became another celebrity, another socialite. She attends fashion shows (Jeremy Scott, a friend of hers), hangs out with celebrities and designers, collaborates with various magazines and works as a model. Nowadays she updates her blog and her twitter very frequently.
Who is the Cory Kennedy of 2010? Tavi? Rumi? Alexa Chung? I don't think so. Things have changed a lot.

La primera entrada de este blog fue sobre Cory Kennedy. En ella explicaba mínimamente quién era, y por qué era famosa. Por aquellos tiempos, a principios de 2007, el fenómeno Cory Kennedy ya había alcanzado su punto máximo, ocupaba muchos posts de estilo personal, y la gente se preguntaba de dónde había salido esa chica y por qué todo el mundo hablaba de ella. A mí me fascinaba (no ella en sí, sino lo que había conseguido) y me gustaba bastante su estilo. No vestiría como ella, pero me parece que instauró un look totalmente nuevo. Combinaba Chanel con prendas de WalMart y parecía no conocer el significado de "peinar". Para mí fue la primera internet celebrity.
Repasemos: en 2005 Cory Kennedy conoció a Mark Hunter The Cobrasnake en un concierto de Blood Brothers. Cory Kennedy tenía 15 años y Mark 20. Se hicieron amigos, y ese verano Cory empezó a trabajar como becaria en las oficinas de Mark dos días a la semana, como parte de un programa de prácticas que dirigía su instituto. The Cobrasnake tenía miles de seguidores en todas partes del mundo ávidos de fotos de fiestas y gente pasándoselo bien. Cory llegó a decir que Mark "conseguía que la peor fiesta pareciera la mejor fiesta del mundo". Mantuvieron una relación sentimental.
Cory comenzó a acompañar a Mark a las fiestas de Santa Mónica, Los Ángeles. Celebrities como Adam Brody (The O.C), el grupo Kings of Leon, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Vincent Gallo, Sean Lennon, etc, eran habituales en la escena. Cada vez que en The Cobrasnake se publicaba una foto de Cory, las visitas se multiplicaban a causa de los numerosos foros y blogs que diseccionaban el estilo de la quinceañera. Mark se dio cuenta de ello y decidió aprovecharlo. Pronto Cory se convirtió en la reina de The Cobrasnake, y las apariciones en revistas comenzaron a llegar. Primero fue Nylon, en la que Cory posó para Marvin Scott Jarrett, editor de la revista y amigo de Mark. Por aquel entonces ya era una celebridad en Myspace.
Apareció en The New York Times, y los clubs de Los Ángeles le llegaban a pagar 100$ al día a ella y a su grupillo por asistir a sus fiestas. Cory había dejado el instituto para estudiar en casa, y sus padres se encontraron con que la situación estaba fuera de control, por lo que decidieron enviarla interna a un colegio con su hermana melliza. Se habló de trastornos emocionales, depresión... Sin embargo, Cory aprovechaba los días libres para salir de fiesta, y su fama siguió creciendo, aunque tenía restringido el uso del móvil y a las sesiones de fotos debían acompañarla sus padres. Consiguió la portada del Women's Wear Daily, tenía su propio perfil en Wikipedia (el cual borraron en 2006, alegando que no era alguien suficientemente famosa o importante, para volver a ponerlo en línea unos años más tarde), fue imagen de Urban Decay, de Sebastian, portada de Jalouse (fotografiada por Terry Richardson), firmó con la agencia de modelos One Model (que representa a modelos como Devon Aoki), tenía una columna en Nylon...
Sus 15 minutos de fama le duraron un par de años (2005 y 2006), durante el 2007 siguió cosechando éxitos, y a partir del 2008-2009 las cosas se calmaron un poco. La niña que protagonizaba el videoclip de Good Charlotte "Keep your hands off my girl" (en el que simplemente comía un plato de comida no identificada delante de la cámara), pasó a ser otra celebrity más, habitual en las fiestas. Sigue yendo a los desfiles (de Jeremy Scott, por ejemplo, de quien es amiga), colabora con revistas, y trabaja como modelo. Actualiza su blog It's Cory Kennedy y su twitter bastante a menudo.
¿Quién creéis que es la Cory del 2010? ¿Tavi? ¿Rumi? ¿Alexa Chung? Yo creo que ninguna. Las cosas han cambiado mucho.
