The Sofia Coppola Formula: Similarities between "Somewhere" and "Lost in Translation"

As you may know, I'm a truly Sofia Coppola fan. I can watch her films over and over again, and it's always like the first time. When "Lost in Translation" was on the cinemas, I remember that my friends went to watch it and left the room after the first 20 minutes. They said it was terribly boring and slow. It wasn't until someone told me it wasn't boring at all that I watched it. And obviously, I loved it. It was an intimate story between two strangers, without Hollywood-esque tricks and plot twists. It was natural, real. Then she made "Marie Antoinette", an equally hated and loved film by the public. You either hate it or love it. It is one of my favourite films. The last Sofia Coppola film I watched was "The Virgin Suicides". The plot didn't appeal to me at all, but the characters were so well written that I can say that I liked the movie.

And now, a new Sofia's film is going to be released: "Somewhere"... I can't wait to watch it! People say that the plot is very similar to "Lost in Translation", and I must say that they are not wrong. "Somewhere" is about the relationship between a father and her daughter, they start as two strangers that want to know each other, just like Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation"

Using the images of the "Somewhere" trailer and the whole movie of "Lost in translation", Sofiafan made this list of the similarities between both films. I asked if I could post it on the blog, and Sofiafan said yes. You'll be surprised.

Como ya sabréis, soy fan de Sofia Coppola. Puedo ver sus películas una y otra vez, y siempre parece como si fuera la primera vez. Cuando estrenaron en el cine "Lost in Translation", recuerdo que mis amigas fueron a verla y se salieron de la sala a los 20 minutos, diciendo que la película era insoportablemente aburrida y lenta. No fue hasta que alguien me dijo que no era aburrida para nada que me decidí a verla. Y obviamente, me encantó. Era una historia intimista entre dos desconocidos, sin los trucos de Hollywood y los típicos giros en el argumento. Era natural, real. Unos años después estrenó "Marie Antoinette", una amada y odiada película a partes iguales por el público. O te gusta, o la detestas. En mi caso, es una de mis películas favoritas. La última película de Sofia Coppola que vi fue "The Virgin Suicides". La historia no me atraía mucho, pero los personajes están tan bien construidos que puedo decir que me gustó la película.

Y ahora, una nueva película de Sofia se va a estrenar: "Somewhere"... ¡Qué ganas de verla! Dicen que el argumento es muy similar a "Lost in Translation", y debo admitir que no se equivocan. "Somewhere" trata sobre la relación entre un padre y su hija, que comienzan como dos desconocidos que quieren conocerse, igual que Scarlett Johansson y Bill Murray en "Lost in Translation".

Usando las imágenes del trailer de "Somewhere" y la película "Lost in Translation", Sofiafan ha hecho esta lista de los parecidos entre ambas películas. Me pareció una lista fantástica y sorprendente, así que le pedí permiso para publicarla en el blog.

Photocall at Mango: some of my favourites

Congrats to Mónica Cruz, she looked stunning in Hervé Leger. I don't understand why people love criticizing her. If she didn't want to wear Mango, well done, she chose an amazing dress and she looked great on it. The best dressed of the night.

"He's just not that into you"


I finally watched "He's just not that into you", a film I was heavily waiting for. I must confess that I thought it would be disappointing, because when I really want to go to the cinema to watch a film that I think is gonna be great, it is usually not as good as I had expected. Nevertheless, the movie was great.

The film is based on a "Sex and the city" line, you probably remember the episode, when Miranda understands that if a man doesn't call her, it's just because "he's just not that into you"

I highly recommend you to watch it. You'll fell in love with Ben Affleck (I did), you'll laugh with Ginnifer Goodwin (I did) and you'll adore Drew Barrymore naïveté. It was high time I saw a good comedy on the cinema.

Por fin he visto "Qué les pasa a los hombres" (menuda traducción), una película que tenía muchas ganas de ver. Debo confesar que fui al cine pensando que me iba a decepcionar, porque siempre me pasa que cuando tengo muchas ganas de ver una película que creo que va a ser buenísima, luego resulta que no era tan buena. Sin embargo, ésta era buenísima.

Está basada en una frase que dicen en "Sexo en Nueva York", seguramente recordáis el capítulo, en el que Miranda por fin entiende que si un hombre no la llama es simplemente porque no se siente atraído por ella.

Recomiendo que la veáis. Os vais a enamorar de Ben Affleck (comprobado), os reiréis con Ginnifer Goodwin (comprobado) y os va a encantar la ingenuidad de Drew Barrymore. Hacía tiempo que no veía en el cine una comedia tan a mi gusto.

Yeah, new things about Sofia Coppola. I found this really good article on The New York Times about her career, her family, her influences...I printed it (it's too long to read it on the computer, I don't like reading long texts on a screen, I prefer the paper) and read it fascinated. I think what Cassavettes says about her father is so true: ''My dad always said, do one creative thing every day. Whatever it is.''

Sí, otro post en el que hablo de Sofia Coppola. He encontrado este artículo en The New York Times en el que hablan de su trabajo, su familia, sus influencias... y es realmente bueno. Lo he impreso para leerlo, porque prefiero leer las cosas en papel que en una pantalla. Me parece que ésto que dice Cassavettes de su padre es una gran verdad: "Mi padre siempre decía, hay que hacer una cosa creativa cada día. Lo que sea"

I love love love James McAvoy... surtout after I watched "Atonement" where he appears at his best... I wish he did more films, and well, better films, because "Wanted" and "Jane Austen"(with Anne Hathaway) were horrible, despite the fact that he acts quite well /// Me encanta James McAvoy... sobretodo después de ver "Expiación", donde aparece guapísimo. Ojalá hiciera más películas, o bueno, películas mejores, porque "Wanted" y "La joven Jane Austen" (con Anne Hathaway) son realmente malas, y eso que él actúa bastante bien.
