Magazines they are a-changin'

This month's been a surprise seeing how almost every spanish fashion magazine has redesigned their layout. They've changed fonts, the proportion between images and text... I don't know if it's just that I care about that kind of things (good art direction is vital), but it's true that it makes you see the content differently. And if that layout change is accompanied by an improvement of the contents, well, then it's just awesome.

-----------

Vogue Spain

Vogue Spain covers are usually very dull. Even though the september one with Miranda Kerr was really pretty, they stuck to their scheme (the same models, classic cropping, etc). Nevertheless, the october cover is a 180º turn. When I saw it, I thought: "This can't be Vogue Spain". But it was. An amazing cover, uncommon, strange frame and fantastic, two models... And in black & white!

If they keep making covers like this, it will be great.

----------

In Elle Spain they had good articles and good editorials from time to time, but they never took risks, and published content of very poor taste sometimes. It seems the change in the direction (the editor in chief resigned after quite difficult problems), is changing things radically. You just have to see their latest two covers (one below) and compare them with the ones they used to make (see them here) They are stunning. Now THAT is a fashion magazine! If they don't make the traditional special issue on december featuring a naked "celebrity" covered in Swarovsky crystals, it will be a good sign.

------------

Marie Claire Spain
Changes in design. If I already liked it, now I like it even more!

Vanidad
Vanidad's case is different. They changed looks some months ago. The magazine used to have black edge (awesome!), and the pages had a very chic allure. They changed everything, and although I still like, I prefer the old version...

---------

Most commonly used adjectives and expressions in fashion magazines

... or which words shouldn't be written so often

Writing about fashion is not easy. It seems that there is a limited range of words to be used and finding new expressions is a challenge. As I read tons of magazines every month, and all of them almost at the same time (I buy 6 magazines and I read them in two days), sometimes I get the impression that the headtitles and the descriptions are always the same. There is a series of adjectives and expressions that are used over and over. Some of them need to be used, but there are others that hurt my eyes when I read them. Of course, there are many great journalists that write very beautifully.

I've made a list with some of the expressions I often find in the pages of the magazines.

Things on my mind: "I'm not there" movie, and "Moose" magazine

I watched "I'm not there" at the cinema yesterday. I really liked it, even if I'm not an expert on Bob Dylan, I enjoyed the film. Nevertheless, if I had known more about Bob's life, I'd have understood more parts of the film, like the one with Richard Gère, which was so original and mysterious. Cate Blanchett was brilliant playing Bob, and Heath Ledger too. I loved the part with Christian Bale and Bob's problems with the press.

It is a film that makes you think about the personality (and personalities) of a person. How people can change with the time, but still remain the same, and how people often misinterpret the actions of a person. That phenomenon was portrayed in the film in an exquisite way: every actor played a different Bob, under a different name, but you could still see something in common between the six portrayals. I read this on IMDB: "The much more complex answer is that none of the people are Dylan, or, in a poetic sense, even people". Interesting, huh?

My favourite quote: Bob (in Cate Blanchett's part) is being surrounded by journalists and papparazzis. One of them asks him: "A word for your fans!" and he answers: "Astronaut!". It made me laugh.

Moose!

Moose is a magazine created by Marina Jamieson (model) and Rocío Mena. It is a place to read about beauty secrets, insider interviews, beautiful editorials... You can read it here.

There is a video directed by Vincent Lacrocq, starring Bárbara García. The cinematography is quite amazing. I like all the little details (the water drops, the sounds...)

Two magazines, a fashion game, and Etro soap & shampoo

For us magazine-holics, the digital magazines are great because there are many and some of them are really good. They offer lots of different perspectives and the quality of the content is quite satisfactory. Showdown was "published" last week and I must say that the result is fantastic.

Good editorials

A very interesting article about Halston

Fantastic article about the supermodels era (by Lucio)

My contribution, an article about Scott's trip to Madrid.

And I was chosen as "Blog of the month" :) Thanks!

Atelier was created by Beatriz, an expert shopping girl that knows everything about shopping in Madrid. The first issue is dedicated to bloggers (thanks!

A very useful article about shopping in New York.

I want that whole outfit! I love that bubblegum pink colour.

A fashion board game!

'Shopping' is the perfect game for fashion lovers. It's like Trivial Pursuit, but about fashion. It has 2200 questions, like "Elle MacPherson appeared in the tv series 'Friends'. True or false?" It seems fun! It's in spanish, but you can read more about it here

¿Verdadero o falso?" Es genial!. Podéis comprarlo aquí.

As you can see, they really know how shopaholics behave, there are only €100 and €500 bills ;) // Como veis no se andan con tonterías y los billetes son de 500€. Cómo nos conocen a las shopaholics ;)

Etro shampoo & soap

Greyhound, cool accesories, and Miss at la Playa in YoDona (El Mundo)

Greyhound

Greyhound is a new digital magazine with amazing content. I found it some days ago and immediately fell in love with it. The editing is so cool, and the images are beautiful, like the one of the little deer above. Merry Christmas!

The newcomers article by Frederic Betancourt

A cool photo :)

Isn't the editing cool? I love it. Simple, and effective,

Elena Cruz Designs

Here you have some of my favourite pieces from the autumn and winter collections of Elena Cruz's designs. I already talked about her some months ago.

Beetle and Flor

Beetle and Flor. The name of the brand sounds like a Brothers Grimm tale, and in fact, even if they can be quite macabre, we still like those interesting stories. Just like these accesories. Christine hand casts all her skulls in raw porcelain and at times affixes them with 18K gold teeth. Interesting, huh? You can find them at her etsy shop. The one above is my favourite.

Miss at la Playa in YoDona (El Mundo)

I was featured along with Garance, Kingdom of Style, Ariadna, Brianda and Jana, in El Mundo's supplement Yo Dona on November the 28th. I am so happy with the result, Frowie is on the first page of the article!

gracias Paola por scanear las páginas :)

Push it Mag, the story so far... in print!
missatlaplaya
I will make a book (just for me) with all the posts I've published in my blog someday, just to have them in a place where I know they won't disappear. Push It had the great idea of making a book (in print) of all the digital issues they have published so far. You can buy it here.

Hardcore clothes

When I get tired of a pair of jeans I'll diy that painter's denim effect... It is quite cool /// Cuando me aburra de algún pantalón que tengo lo renovaré con este efecto de vaqueros de pintor, es guay.

I still love shredded tees. /// Aún me gustan las camisetas deshilachadas.

Bright and happy colours

I'm reading "The wild things" by Dave Egger, the book adapted from "Where the wild things are" by Maurice Sendak, and Spike Jonze's film. These images reminded me of it, maybe because of the animals, I don't know. I just thought they were cool. Designed by Yang Du, found here and here.

Lo he encontrado aquí y aquí.

and some laughs!
