Wingardium Leviosa! The wizard glasses

Oliver Peoples

I'll be watching the new Harry Potter film (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I) tomorrow. I don't know if it's going to be a good movie, but it's become a tradition. I HAVE to watch it, and that's all.

The Harry Potter books are one of my favourites, and I think I've already talked about that (there's a post about "The Erised Mirror", and my guesses for the Deathly Hallows book -all wrong, by the way-).

Today I'm showing you some glasses categorized as "the wizard glasses". Now you just need a scar on the forehead, two brave and loyal friends, a wand, a death enemy, and of course, magic powers.

The Double Life of celebrities

The fashion house Fay has edited a book with never seen before pictures of some of the most iconic characters of our time. It's called Double Life. According to the book, "Every personality has at least two faces: the openly shown public one, and the intimate and private one, reflecting the hidden facets of its character"

The real Gabrielle Chanel

coco chanel, douglas kirkland

These photos are from the book "Mademoiselle, Summer '62". Douglas Kirkland, a young american photographer, spent the weeks of july (summer of '62), as Gabrielle Chanel prepared one of her collections. According to Karl's prologue in the book, it was one of her last influent collections, as fashion was doing a 180º turn and miniskirts (which she hated) were dominating the wardrobes of the women.

I found these photos extremely adorable. I had never seen Gabrielle smiling and playing in front of the camera.

Harry Potter's girlfriend

The Harry Potter series are one of my favourite books. Yes, they might not be Shakespeare, but I think that J.K. Rowling did an amazing job. When I was little, I devoured all the books. It was like discovering a new world full of fantastic things, that even made me believe I'd get a letter from Hogwarts when I turned eleven.

I was reading the new issue of Dirrtyglam (available online here), when I came across these beautiful pictures of Bonnie Wright, who plays Ginny Weasley in the movies. Ginny becomes a very important character, but I won't say anything, because one of the things I hate the most is when people tell me the end of a story. She's changed a lot since we saw her at the King's Cross scene, hasn't she?

-----------------

Books that talk about fashion (in some way)

I love reading books. If I find a good one, I read it in a couple of days, and when it's over, it's sad.
Here you have a list of books about fashion.

- Devil wears Prada, by Lauren Weisberger: If you are reading this blog, you've probably read the book and watched the film twice at least. To be honest, it's a brilliant book.
- How to walk in high heels, by Camilla Morton: It's not a masterpiece, but it's entertaining. A guide to everything. She gives all sorts of tips, like how to buy nice curtains, how to mantain a garden, or how to help an ill person. It's actually quite useful.
- A girl for all seasons, by Camilla Morton: 365 days of tips, quotes, advice... I liked the other one best.
- Catwalk cats, Grace Coddington: the drawings are very cute, but the story was a little boring in my opinion. Maybe I wasn't in the mood when I read it. Anyway, I love Grace Coddington!
- Secrets of the model dorm, by Amanda Kerlin and Phil Oh: Interesting. It gives you a sincere idea of what it is like to be a young model.
- Gossip Girl, by Cecily von Ziegesar: The books are WAY better than the series, even if the series are fun too. I read all of them, they are addicting. Do you know if "The Carlyles" books are good?
- Marie Antoinette, The Journey: I know it's a biography, but it has a lot of costume description. I wanted to read it before I watched the movie (the Sofia Coppola), and I hardly had time and stayed until late for several days. I highly recommend the book.
- Queen of Babble: the books are fine. The main character wants to be a wedding dress designer. The author is Meg Cabot, which is one of my favourite "teen" writers ever. She's so clever and funny. She wrote "The Princess Diaries".
- Style A to Zoe, by Rachel Zoe: Entertaining, but not worth the buy.

Books about fashion I want to read:
- House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival, by Deborah Ball
- The beautiful fall: Lagerfeld, Saint Laurent, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris, by Alicia Drake
Do you have a favourite one?

Me encanta leer.
- A girl for all seasons, de Camilla Morton: 365 días de anécdotas, citas, consejos...

Quiero leer:
- House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival, de Deborah Ball
- The beautiful fall: Lagerfeld, Saint Laurent, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris, de Alicia Drake

It's always fun talking about "Devil wears Prada"

I found this article because Miss at la Playa was linked on it (the Runway covers I made) and I found it funny and interesting. I already knew many of the things told on it, but it was fun remembering all the hype that surrounded the book and the film. It may be just another film, but there hasn't been a better film about fashion since Devil wears Prada (Sex and the City and Confessions of a shopaholic were so bad)

FAQs of Devil wears Prada

In what ways is the book's Miranda Priestly similar to Vogue's Anna Wintour?
Even though The Devil Wears Prada author Lauren Weisberger has never publicly admitted to basing her character Miranda Priestly on her former Vogue boss, there are a handful of unquestionable similarities. The Anna Wintour Devil Wears Prada true story reveals the following parallels:
-Both Miranda from the book and the real life Anna Wintour are British.
-Both serve as the editor-in-chief of a major fashion magazine.
-Both worked at their magazine's overseas counterpart before being transferred to New York (Miranda at French Runway and Wintour at British Vogue).
-Both have a fashion quirk (Wintour wears large, dark sunglasses while in the book Miranda sports a white Hermès scarf).
-Both enjoy playing tennis.
-Both have two children.
-Both serve on the board of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
-Both have marital problems that end in divorce.
-Both are known for their cold, cutthroat personalities.
-Both have nearly identical offices (which prompted Wintour to redecorate hers)

Anna Wintour's real offices and Miranda Priestly's

Did Wintour really attend the movie's premiere?
Yes. Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour wore a Prada dress to a special advance screening of The Devil Wears Prada in New York. Meryl Streep described her as being "very, very cordial" when the two were introduced at the movie's premiere. "We chatted, briefly," said Streep. "She was very gracious. I think the book was probably more upsetting to her than the film."
-guardian.co.uk

What did Anna Wintour think of the movie?
The day after she attended the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada, Anna Wintour's spokesman issued a statement about the film, "She thought it was very entertaining. It was satire. What's not to like?" (guardian.co.uk) In a Barbara Walters Anna Wintour interview, the Vogue editor-in-chief conveyed her reaction to the movie by saying, "I thought the film was really entertaining. Anything that makes fashion entertaining and glamorous and interesting is wonderful for our industry. So, I was 100 percent behind it" (ABC News).

How did author Lauren Weisberger land a job at Vogue?
Lauren landed her job as Anna Wintour's assistant by utilizing her own creativity. She mocked up her résumé to look like a magazine. She then submitted it to Condé Nast Publications and within days she was hired as Ms. Wintour's assistant. -The New York Times

Is it true that top fashion designers were afraid to appear in the movie?
The true story behind The Devil Wears Prada reveals that only one designer, Valentino Garavani, actually appeared as himself in the movie (ReelzChannel). It has been reported that Vogue's Anna Wintour warned major fashion designers to not accept their invitations to make cameo appearances. Yet, no hard evidence of such warnings can be verified. However, the absence of these individuals in the movie may be sufficient evidence in itself.
